What are Consumer packaged goods (CPG)? I’m Jesse Janae. This is Shipping Things, and today I’m going to share with you all the steps to creating beautiful packaging for your product. something like this. I’ve never done this early in an episode, not ever. But this is important. I’m going to do an early model list. And why? Because you need to know that before you try to start selecting custom packaging. Not all three parties and shipping partners even work with Consumer packaged goods or allow it. So before you get all hopped up on your new custom box, make sure your shipping partner supports it. And if you’re already working with one that doesn’t, we have some links to some that do below.

Now, the rule of thumb for your Consumer packaged goods budget is to spend between one and 3% of your total campaign funds or total revenue on the packaging. Within that 1%, there are a lot of design options. I think the simplest thing to do is break it down into two parts. Think of it as the inside and the outside of your Consumer packaged goods. The outside of your box or mailer is like a storefront. It’s an opportunity to make a unique impression with your brand, so you want to make it eye-catching. And if you’re going to spend more than 1% of your budget on the packaging, there are a few options.

You can use rubber stamps to customize a blank box, or you can use stickers or labels to add a nice pop of customization that’s easy to apply. And lastly but not least, you can use custom tape, which is an awesome blend of form and function. On the higher end of the packaging budget spectrum, more like 3%, you can start considering getting a custom printed box, and you can play with different finishes and design options to make your brand really stand out. Now let’s go inside the box. If the outside of the box is like your storefront, then the inside of the box is like the inside of your very own store for your brand. Now, your customers have already bought this from you, so you don’t need to keep selling it.

The inside of the box is a great way to add ambience to the whole experience and make your customers feel special. If you’re shipping in a box, you could stamp the inside of the lid with a custom message while still staying in the 1% range. Other options include using coloured void fill, such as coloured tissue paper or coloured crinkle, to add a nice pop without breaking the bank. And on that 3% end of the Consumer packaged goods budget, you can do some nifty stuff like play with custom printed tissue paper or butcher paper for wrapping your product, or go with some custom printed collateral notes inside your box. Or play with some fun box options.

Like here, you could print the inside of your box with a fun custom message, or put another box in the box for gifting, or play with little hang tags. There are all sorts of options. Guys go wild. We’re almost done. But if I may, I’d like to end with a big picture. Whether it’s supporting a new idea or product via Kickstarter pledges or whether it’s just regular old ecommerce shopping, something undeniable is happening in our world, people.

More and more products than ever are shipping directly from creators to customers’ doorsteps. This is a collection of packages that were sold on my doorstep just yesterday, and if you notice anything, a lot of them are just plain craft. That means it’s an unprecedented opportunity to actually stand out with Consumer packaged goods. Think of it as part of your marketing budget. So instead of just investing in fleeting things like online ads, you invest in a tangible thing that your customer is actually going to take a full moment to unwrap, enjoy, and treasure. That is an incredible opportunity.

Bottled and Jarred Packaged Goods is one of the most common types of packaging used for storing edible and organic food items. Glass packaging has been used since 1500 BC owing to its preservative characteristic. At first, glass packaging was limited to preserving wine and liquor but in the present day and age, storage and preservation are used through Bottle and jar packaging extensively in the foodservice industry. Bottle and Jar packaging provides a great advantage over using another contemporary packaging because Bottle and Jar packaging keep the food items relatively fresh. Furthermore, Bottle and Jar packaging provides a see-through view of the original product which helps the consumer in making the right judgment call. But as with everything, these do also come with their respective advantages and disadvantages which are described as follows

Advantages

Food quality preservation

Firstly, Bottled and Jarred Packaged Goods is much easier to store, and they can preserve for longer durations owing to the preservative nature of glass, as the packaged food in bottles and jars are tightly sealed which saves the food items from infection and corrosion which in turn keeps the food fresh for a longer period. This is because Bottle and Jar packaging has a non-porous, glossy surface, and glass can not absorb germs and repels food odors. All this preserves the food quality and increases its shelf life

Environment friendly

As compared to the rest of the packaging products available, bottle and jar packaging is more environmentally friendly and can be recycled and repeatedly used without any health repercussions to the environment or the end-user. Furthermore, bottle and jar packaging is made from resource-efficient materials such as glass which is made up of natural raw material such as sand and cullet, which helps to save energy and reconversion at lesser temperatures while melting, has the potential for 100% recyclability. Additionally, glass bottles and jars do not degrade each time they are recycled as compared to their plastic contemporaries.

Hygiene

Bottled and Jarred Packaged Goods are more hygienic as they protect the item from bacteria and dirt, the lids ensure air tightening and save items from exposure to toxins and corrosive materials, plus bottled and jarred packaging prevents insects from damaging the items.

Health concerns

Bottled and Jarred Packaged Goods are more suited to sustain health as glass is a non-toxic substance and has a substantial resistance attribute to prevent leeching which is less as compared to plastic and metallic products which have been reportedly found to leech chemicals into the stored products and any impropriety from changes within the storage atmosphere can accelerate the decay and damage to products stored in plastic packaging while it does harm and damage products stored in glass products.

Disadvantages

Production cost and shipping

The production cost of bottled and jarred packaging is significantly high as compared to plastic packaging products because glass is more expensive to produce and utilizes more industrial energy to produce as compared to plastic packaging. Additionally, bottles and jars used for packaging require a great amount of care in their transportation and packaging which causes more value-added costs on the net cost of a glass bottle or a jar. A glass bottle or jar has more freight costs as a glass 2 oz bottle would require a glass material to build a bottle or a jar equivalent to 177 lbs. as the plastic counterpart requires only raw material to establish a 0.023 lbs. which could hold a 2 oz bottle amount of liquid. Convenience

A major disadvantage of Bottled and Jarred Packaged Goods is that it could be inconvenient as people tend to prefer sealed containment units made of glass and plastic, the benefit of freshness becomes irrelevant when it comes to avidly and actively consumed meals and products such as cereals and ordinary snacks. Glass bottles and jars are mostly made in greater size than the original item contained which makes them more space-consuming and less compact for storage purposes. Furthermore, bottles and glass jars made from glass require opening a cork, cap, or a lid which is tight nit on the jar that makes it less easy to open and utilize

Impact resistance

Another major disadvantage of bottle and jars are that they cannot withstand an impact, which is a high probability concerning the stages from manufacturing, shipping, storage, distribution, and shelf utility of the bottled and jarred products. Furthermore, when compared with their metallic and plastic counterparts which have greater durability and impact resistance, which preserves the food and liquid items stored safe from external exposure which saves them from going to waste which unfortunately is not the case with bottled and jarred packings made of glass that are prone to shattering and rendering the contained item as wasted.

Weight

Bottled and Jarred Packaged Goods are mostly made from glass which is significantly heavier than their plastic or metallic counterparts when it comes to packaging. There are direct and indirect disadvantages arising out of the excessive weight which bottles and jars, direct disadvantages include the overall heavier weight of the product as glass bottles and jars have their weight but that weight coupled with the weight of the contained item becomes a bother as far as utility and transport; the indirect disadvantage of weight is that it adds on to the production and shipment value due to the added weight which is added on to the costs of the end consumer.

Opinion

Bottled and Jar packaged products have their own set of advantages and disadvantages, which is likely to be considered concerning the product selected, as for some products bottled and jar packaging does not yield any value to the consumer which are actively consumed such as cereals but bottled and jar packaging is of great significance when it comes to preserving food items such as white rice, wheat, oats and corn which can be in storage for a relatively long period. The major advantage arising out of bottled and jarred packaging is its preservative character while the disadvantage is the high cost. Conclusively, the product determines whether bottled and jar packaging is significant or not.
