Spring is the kick starter to summer, and Florida is an obvious choice for a spring break vacation for those tired of the winter cold. Do you want someplace to party over spring break? Or avoid the crowds and hang out enjoying the ocean views? How about a place to take the whole family? No matter what kind of vibe you are looking for, Florida has exactly what you want.

For those who like to party on vacation, destinations such as Fort Lauderdale are still a good choice. Fort Lauderdale has long been the party headquarters for spring breakers, so there is something for everyone to do here. There are plenty of neighboring beaches to visit if you get tired of the partying crowd, such as Hollywood, Boca Raton, Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, and Delray Beach.

Daytona Beach has also become one of the favorite destinations of spring breakers, so you will find lots of bars, restaurants, and general good times during that week. It also has a boardwalk that would be great fun for the kids, with rides, arcades, and free concerts throughout the summer. You can also go driving a 4X4 on the beach or enjoy the Daytona Lagoon Water Park, which offers water slides, go-carts, laser tag, and many other fun things to do if partying isn’t your preference.

If you are wondering if the Emerald Coast and Scenic Highway 30A is a good location to visit during spring break, the answer is yes! All along the coast you will find amazing weather and high-energy vacay vibes wherever you visit. There are both high schoolers and college kids who are having a good time as well as families and couples who want to experience a beautiful beach day.

Some of the more popular 30A places to spend a sunny holiday break include Destin, Fort Walton, and Panama City. Panama City Beach has long been a spring break destination because of its great weather, parties and free concerts that are offered during the whole month of March. There are also a variety of bars, clubs and restaurants. Panama City is geared more for the college crowd, so Fort Walton is a better choice for older vacationers or families who want to play at the beach but not party quite so hard.

Fort Walton offers the same sparking white beaches as other destinations, but it also would be a great place for a couple or a family to vacation in. Things to do and see include the island’s Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park, where you can enjoy sea life shows and fun dolphin encounters. They also have sea lions, seals, penguins, alligators and stingrays as well as a conservation program. Other fun sites to see include the Indian Temple Mound Museum, the Air Force Armament Museum and the Emerald Coast Science Center for those who enjoy more educational destinations.

If you are looking for a more relaxing vacation, try a smaller, less crowded town such as Seaside. This idyllic little place may get some of the spring break crowd, but not as much as the previously mentioned spots. Seaside is a great choice if you don’t want to mingle with the partygoers but still want to get some sun and have a more relaxed vacation. It’s also a great place to bring the kids because the whole atmosphere and community is like taking a step back in time. The whole town of Seaside is highly walkable, with no hotels or high-rises, and the gaily colored Seaside vacation rentals behind their white picket fences are all part of the neighborhood. Only seconds from the beach is the town square, where you can find dining options, shopping and museums, and public art. There is also an amphitheater that hosts family movie night during the summer months.

Another good place to take the family is Cocoa Beach, which is the perfect spring break location if you prefer to be near the Kennedy Space Center along Florida’s Space Coast. Here you can enjoy another fun beach town that includes beautiful sandy beaches and excellent surf breaks. There are many family-friendly attractions and activities, including outdoor preserves that are perfect for hiking, and of course visiting the Kennedy Space Center. From here you see rockets launch, meet working astronauts, or even try your hand at one of the astronaut training simulators.

If you prefer to just enjoy an island paradise during your spring break, then Key Largo may be the best location for you. The waters year-round are warm to swim in, which may be the escape you and your family need, especially if the kids are water babies who just can’t stay on dry land. This island paradise is steeped in history as well as fun things to do. It is home to the world’s largest artificial reef, and John Pennekamp Coral Reef Underwater State Park is the first underwater park in the United States. It offers must-see coral formations and fascinating marine life in its natural habitat. In Key Largo you can also dive, snorkel, fish, kayak, swim with dolphins, and take glass-bottom boat rides to enjoy the marine life teeming in the ocean. Everglades National Park is also just a short trip away.

At the time of this writing, spring has finally sprung! After a long winter preceded by the corona-riddled summer and fall of 2020, a lot of us are looking forward to the annual renewal of spring. Many of us will be spending time cleaning up the yard, sprucing up the garden, and handling other spring maintenance chores. Why not make our homes safer while we’re at it?

You can never give too much attention to safety. Whether it’s making the yard safer for the kids or beefing up security to prevent burglary, there is always something to do. This year is no exception. Below are five ways you can make your home safer in the coming weeks and months.

1. Install or Repair Fencing

Fencing is one of the most practical ways to increase safety for both children and pets. A good fence can stop both from wandering off. That is especially important if you have little ones who like to play in the yard. A good fence with a locked gate also makes it more difficult for intruders to do what they do.

Spring is a great time to install a new fence. If your yard sign is already fenced, this is a good time to address maintenance issues. Repair any broken sections. Take a look at the gate to make sure it still locks properly. If you have a wood fence, it may need a new coat of paint.

2. Trim Back the Shrubs

Trimming shrubs and bushes is a normal springtime activity. But did you know it enhances safety? Burglars appreciate overgrown bushes and shrubs because these provide cover. They use the overgrowth to hide their movements as they attempt to enter through a first-floor window or door.

Trimming them back affords a clearer view of your home. And when the view is clear from the street, burglars are less likely to target your home.

3. Install New Door Locks

Believe it or not, first-floor doors are the preferred entry point for burglars. They especially love doors with flimsy, keyed locks that are easily breached with a swift kick. An experienced burglar can get through such a door in seconds. What is the solution? New door locks.

The easiest way to prevent burglars from kicking in your first-floor doors is to install heavy-duty deadbolts. Better yet, Vivint Home Security recommends heavy-duty smart locks. A smart lock is an electronic lock that doesn’t require a key for entry. The benefit, in terms of security, is being alerted every time the door opens and closes.

4. Address Hazards in the Yard

Melting snow has a way of revealing hazards in the yard. Spring is the time to address those hazards. If winter’s freeze-thaw cycles have created small holes in your lawn, fill them in with dirt and plant new grass. Doing so will prevent someone from twisting an ankle or tripping and falling.

Other examples of hazards include damaged lawn furniture, cracked patio slabs, broken tree limbs, exposed tree stumps, and so forth. Anything in the yard that could contribute to an accident should be addressed. After all, you want your yard to be welcoming, not threatening.

5. Change Your Smoke Detector Batteries

Finally, spring is when we observe the start of daylight saving time by advancing our clocks one hour. Heed the advice of your local fire department and change the batteries in all your smoke detectors.

Spring is finally here. That means home improvement projects. As long as you’ll be putting in the time and effort this spring, why not do what you can to make your home safer?
